Otoplasty, commonly known as ear reshaping or ear pinning, is a procedure to correct prominent ears. It is a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of the ears. Common complaints of patients wishing to undergo otoplasty are that their ears are misshapen, too protruding or too large (macrotia).Protruding ears can be the result of the lack of development of the antihelix (the inward curving ridge of the upper ear). Ears can also protrude due to a deep cup, or concha, of the ear. Many people with protruding ears have inherited the feature from a parent.
A customized otoplasty procedure will vary depending on the cosmetic deformity being corrected. Otoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that takes approximately 2 hours and is usually performed on both ears in order to enhance the symmetry and balance of the face. Dr. Tanna will make an incision behind the ear and remove skin and cartilage while also folding the ear cartilage back. Incisions are typically hidden on the back of the ear or within the creases of your ear. A natural ear shape is restored, creating balance and proportion between the ears and face. Otoplasty can be performed in the outpatient for either children and or adults. To determine if you are a candidate for this procedure, Dr. Tanna will examine your ears to determine placement, size, shape and symmetry, and discuss expectations.
Many parents (some of whom experienced teasing as a child) bring their children to our New York plastic surgery office for cosmetic ear surgery. Children with overlarge or protruding ears can suffer. You, as a parent, can help your child have a happier life by arranging ear surgery with Dr. Tanna at his New York office. Children typically have this procedure under general anesthetic, as it is less stressful for the young. The first step is a consultation where we can meet your child, evaluate the ear structure, advise you of what surgery will entail, and answer all your questions and concerns.
Not every person with protruding or overlarge ears had the benefit of surgery as a child, and come to us as an adult to resolve unsightly ears. If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or appearance of your ears, we can advise you about what to expect in surgery, recovery time, and results. If overlarge or protruding ears have led you to feel a lack of confidence in your appearance, we can help. Imagine wearing short haircuts, or confidently tucking your hair behind your ears, which are now lying against the head in a natural position that enhances your appearance, rather than distracting from it.
Some patients feel their earlobes are simply too large in their development. For such patients, Dr. Tanna performs earlobe reduction to bring them back to a more aesthetic proportion for their ears and face.
Dr. Neil Tanna understands that correcting protruding or misshapen ears can offer great patient satisfaction. When performing otoplasty, the desired result is a natural-appearing ear shape and size. The ear is set back to the face, without visible, unsightly scars. Ultimately, the shape and size of the ear should be balanced and enhance your other facial features.Learn More
