Nose Surgery: The Hands Behind the Procedure

While many surgeons promote their services to perform nose surgery, it is rare to find a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, who is also certified in Head & Neck Surgery. Dr. Tanna is known for surgical excellence, his attention to detail, and for the impressive results he achieves for his patients. With any facial surgery, you want the most qualified surgeon working with you. Rather than employing a standard procedure, he customizes each surgery to create a natural look that enhances other facial features.

Rhinoplasty Procedure: The Steps

While your surgical treatment plan will be customized to suit your facial structure, the procedure has a few general steps, which include:

  • Patient put under anesthesia, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, based on patient need.
  • Incisions are placed, with two options, open or closed. With an open approach, a small incision is placed at the base of the nose. Alternatively, during a closed rhinoplasty the incisions are all within the nose. The type of incisions used will be based upon the needs of the patient.
  • The nose is resculpted and reshaped to a more attractive size and shape by removing excess cartilage or bone in some patients. Our rhinoplasty in Long Island surgery may require cartilage grafts, such as in cases of a rhinoplasty revision.
  • Incisions are closed with sutures and treated area bandaged and splinted.

Your Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Your newly sculpted nose will be supported by a splint and you may have packing within the nose, covered with bandages to keep the nose structure supported while healing. The facial structure is very sensitive, and it will require several weeks for swelling to subside. Bruising is a normal event after surgery.

Though your newly-shaped nose will begin to become evident within a couple of weeks, the final, sculpted appearance will continue to refine as the weeks pass. Even early on, appearance and breathing will be greatly improved.

Healing

Every person heals at a different rate. You can help advance the healing process by keeping your head elevated and avoiding bending over or any excessive physical motion. You can return to your regular activities, including exercise, sports, or other vigorous activities after your healing has progressed sufficiently. We carefully monitor your progress and will be seeing you several times during your recovery. Dr. Tanna will advise you when you can again engage in exercise or perform heavy lifting or other strenuous activities.

Nasal Analysis

Rhinoplasty is not a one-size-fits-all operation. Dr. Tanna believes in taking an individualized approach for each patient while accounting for their unique anatomy and preferences.

There are, however, general principles of facial and nasal aesthetics that can serve as a starting point to help patients analyze their noses and determine major areas of concern.
